Packing can quickly become a nuisance on the go. It can last forever and take over your life – and your space. Thankfully, it’s not like that!
As with many thing in life, it all depends on the approach. Approaching your packing in a good way will save time, money, space, and frustration. We’ve rounded up 6 of our favorite tips for efficient packaging. These tips may seem like common sense, trust us – they are often overlooked!
Start early
We understand that you don’t always get a good long time until moving day. Sometimes you’re driving on a shorter timeline which can be a bit stressful. However, don’t let stress overwhelm you and distract you from getting things done!
No matter how much time you have until moving day, start packing as soon as possible. It’s almost impossible to pack effectively if you start the game late.
Make a plan
This should be bold and underline its essential. Starting with planning is crucial to staying productive. When you have a plan, you can remain calm and relaxed during the process. The effect is highest when you reach the level!
Start with making a do list and a timetable for getting these things done. Regarding packing, starting as early as possible with your fragile items is best. This allows you to wrap pack them carefully without rushing.
Next on your list will likely be items you use less often. Bring in out-of-season sportswear or equipment at this stage. Save that for your last everyday items, as you’ll need them until moving day.
Say some goodbyes
Pack only what you want to bring. That makes sense. You be surprise how easy it is to pack everything, even if you don’t need it. (Honestly – who needs everything in their house?)
Unless you’ve followed Marie Kondo’s lifestyle to the letter, you have some more lying around. Clothes you haven’t worn in years, books you’ll never read again, and hey – how did this old mixer end up in the kitchen cupboard?
When creating a plan, start with the “goodbye” phase. Gather your donations, gifts, and items for sale. Add moving these items to your to-do list soon too. Selling items may take longer than you anticipate.
Hoarding
For adequate packaging, ensure you can be in the process when you get there. That means having all your supplies on hand. There’re many places to get free boxes, and we recommend picking them up from local stores. Then you’ll need duct tape, markers, labels, and things like wrapping paper and bubble wrap for fragile items.
It’s a delicate balance to stock on supply without gathering too much stuff. That’s why it’s a good idea to find out how much money is coming to you.
Consider buying special items like a dresser or dish box. Wardrobe boxes allow you to pack your clothes without taking them off the hanger, packing and unpacking all the more efficiently. The dish box will help you protect your dishes or glasses because they have special compartments to avoid collisions during transportation.
Use what you have
Not everything requires professional supplies. If your wardrobe is not too heavy, you can put light items in the drawers and secure them. You can wrap things in towels, sheets, and clothing to protect them. The suitcase can double as a box replacement.
Be creative and use what you have. This will make packing efficient and unpacking easy – less stuff to throw away on the other side!
Specify a space
Since you start early (right?), you’ll be packing boxes around your house for a while. That means you risk staring at piles of packing materials and stacks of packed containers. Instead, specify a packing space.
If you have an empty or little-used room, arrange a tight corner. Keep your packing supplies there & stack your boxes neatly when they’re ready to go. Even if you don’t have the extra luxury of space, create a corner that’s fit for purpose. Do yourself a favor and keep thing orderly in this corner, so you do not get frustrated along the way.
