There is a lot involved in moving to a new home. There’s a lot to consider between packing up, changing addresses, preparing old accommodation for new tenants, and managing progress and to-do lists. And that doesn’t even include what you need to do when you get there.
Mistakes are natural part of life, and making them on the go is easy. There is a lot to keep an eye on, and for most of us, moving into a new home isn’t something we do regularly to become experts. If you make mistakes here and there, do not beat yourself up. Of course, if you can avoid some of them, that is even better.
We’ve compiled a list of five common migration mistakes and some tips on avoiding them. Checking this list before moving will make the whole process easier.
Waiting too long to make a reservation
One of the easy mistakes to make during the move is waiting too long for a reservation.
Don’t get caught up in making to do lists and planning your schedule. The best way to ensure you’re off to a good start is to order whatever you need early on. Don’t underestimate that what you need will be available upon request.
Moving machines are scarce during peak times. Prices also increase when there is high demand, so if you have the choice, try planning your move outside these times. If you don’t plan, you may struggle to find the motivation to be ready.
By planning, you’ll be able to get one big thing off your list, and you’ll have a day to organize your remaining efforts. Booking early also means you’ll be able to schedule the movers you want and the equipment you need to do the job.
Miscalculate your budget
Budget mistakes are the most common. It’s easy to underestimate your moving costs. This reinforces the first point – if you book your car early, you’ll start by knowing how much you expect to pay for an essential part of getting you to your new home.
Know that moving large items will incur additional fees. Your driver will charge extra if you have a piano, pool table, or a large piece of art as they need unique know-how and equipment.
The same goes for complex, complicated, or stair-stepped entrances. Budget for these when looking at the overall range. Of course, your movers will include these in their quotes when you book, so make sure you mention them.
Other budget considerations include cleaning up your old residence and any repair you may need to take into account. The same go for your new place – for example, if you’re buying a home, consider any repairs or upgrades you’d like to make before or shortly after moving.
Considering the cost of packing materials and supplies, rent a unit if you plan to store your belongings for the short or long term, and if you’re moving long distances, you’ll have to pay for the shipping costs. Or drive your car. If you have kids or pet, you may want to put them in an animal-friendly daycare or daycare.
It’s better to overestimate your budget. Aim a little high and treat yourself to a celebratory dinner with all you have left in your new neighborhood.
Not getting help
Are you sure you’ll handle your transportation? We do not doubt that you can if you have to. But do you want? We think you should reconsider.
There are several stages in the migration process when assistance can be helpful. Don’t be too shy to ask! Why not throw a packed party with some friends? Order some pizza, offer wine, and chat about fond memories of when you packed the boxes. Not only will you cross some things off your list, but you’ll also have an enjoyable moment to reflect on all the beautiful times you’ve had in your current home and neighborhood.
You can hire a package moving company if you want to save time and effort. A full-service staff member will carry all the necessary packing supplies and pack for you. Not only that, but they will also disassemble the large furniture. At your new home, they will reassemble and fill your boxes. They’ll even take the document away, saving you a lot of hassle – and time spent staring at boxes.
Improperly preparing loose items
Some things don’t deserve the box. This includes lawn and garden tools, paint, and anything that uses gasoline. Moving to a different climate, you probably won’t need some of these. Leave snow? That snow blower and shovel might find a new home. If you’re moving into an apartment or condominium, your lawn and garden don’t need to be carried.
Drain fuel from any of your motorize equipment. Get rid of any paint buckets you don’t need. Anything that could be considered dangerous should not be in your “take-away” pile, so find somewhere to put these before your engine arrives.
I Forgot to pack a box of essentials
What do you think you would want at the end of a long day? Take a hot shower, change clothes, and get into bed. But what if all of this was buried in a box?
Save yourself some digging around and pack a box of essentials. Linens, towels, a change of clothes, a few sets dishes and cups will help you feel at home without the hunting. Include in this box any medicine, toothpaste, and toiletries you and your family need. Clearly label your Essential Box (or boxes) for easy access.
